Prior to the discovery of insulin in 1922, the trace mineral vanadium was used for the control of blood sugar because it can mimic the activity of insulin. Two small studies (one with six, and one with seven type II  diabetic patients) have confirmed the effectiveness of vanadyl sulfate at a dose of 100mg/day in improving insulin sensitivity.2 3
