Lutein ins the carotenoids, Lutein and zeaxanthin, extracted from marigold petals and then purified into crystalline form. Carotenoids are a family of brightly colored pigments in foods. These carotenoids are less common than beta-carotene, but they appear to offer greater benefits.
Scientific tests have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin protect the retina of the human eye from light-induced damage and protect laboratory animals' skin against ultraviolet light-induced damage.
A recent study conducted in Italy shows impressive improvements in the skin after supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin. The study on women aged 25 to 50 over a 12 week period, found that oral supplementation increased skin hydration by 38 percent, skin elasticity by 8 percent, and the level of superficial lipids present in the skin by 33 percent. Further, a combination of oral and topical use of lutein and of lutein and zeaxanthin increased results to 60%, 20% and 50% respectively.
