The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has doubled the amount of Vitamin D recommended from 200 IU to 400 IU per day for infants, children and adolescents. Remarkably, this new guideline is recommended for infants starting in the first few days of life.
New research indicates that 400 units a day will prevent and treat rickets. Adequate D through childhood may also reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life.
For children and adolescents, the AAP recommends those who do not obtain 400 IU/day through vitamin D-fortified milk and foods should take a 400 IU vitamin D supplement daily. However, according to head researcher and author of groundbreaking studies on vitamin D, Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., Boston University of Medicine, "You would need to drink 10 glasses of fortified milk everyday just to get the minimum necessary level of vitamin D."
