Vitamin D insufficiency associated with increased body fat.
A cross-sectional study in young women reported in the November 4 Online
First issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism resulted in
an association with increased body fat and decreased height.
Richard Kremer, MD, PhD, and colleagues from McGill University Health Center in
Montreal, Canada, are quoted as stating "Vitamin D insufficiency has now reached
epidemic proportions and has been linked to low bone mineral density,
increased risk of fracture and obesity in adults."
Serotonin Syndrome? The Toxic Exposure Surveillance
System found that during 2004, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
caused significant toxic effects in 8187 persons, leading to 103 deaths.
This effect may be under diagnosed given that SSRIs are not the only contributing
agents.
Serotonin toxicity is a condition that can be caused by the concurrent use of
2 or more agents that enhance synaptic serotonin levels. Changes may include
confusion, delirium, agitation, restlessness, muscular spasms, hyperpyrexia,
diaphoresis, tachycardia, blood pressure fluctuations, mydriasis, nausea, or
diarrhea. Symptoms often develop within 2 hours of the increase in the synaptic
level of serotonin.
It's possible that more than 85% of physicians are unaware that this syndrome
even exists.

Depression Hinders Glucose Control
in Type 2 Diabetes
Depression in individuals with type 2 diabetes is associated
with higher blood glucose levels with time, new research suggests.
A study looking at the longitudinal effects of depression on glycemic control
in 11,525 veterans with type 2 diabetes shows that hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
values are, on average, 0.13% higher in those with depression during a 4-year
period.

Do antibacterial soaps protect us?
Simple hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of viruses and
bacteria. But are we overdoing it with antibacterial soaps? Don't mistake those
products as a safeguard against viruses, flu, and the common cold. They kill
bacteria, but are otherwise a waste. And some scientists say overuse is possibly
contributing to antibiotic drug resistance. Go easy on the antibacterial soap,
and you'll be doing yourself--and the environment--a favor. Just plain soap
does the job!
