Answers for light sleepers.

Dr.Harvey Colton, chairman of the committee that wrote the report Sleep Deprivation and Sleep Disorders: An Unmet Public Health Problem, states "Until about 50 years ago, sleep was really in the province of poets, not scientists. Then, a series of studies on brain wave activity, as well as heart and lung function during sleep clearly showed that sleep was not a passive state, but "a very complex and active physiological state."

The brain never decreases activity. Studies have shown that the brain is as active during sleep as it is when awake.

We hear a lot about REM sleep, but you may not be aware of a second stage of sleep called non-REM. Changes in your brain waves determine the stage of non-REM sleep.

Non-REM sleep consists of four stages that range from light dozing to deep sleep. A sleeper usually progresses through the four stages of non-REM before entering REM, then cycles back through non-REM again and repeats this during the night usually some four or five times.

  • Beta - awake/alert

  • Alpha - relaxed - such brain waves are often associated with states of relaxation and peacefulness during meditation and biofeedback.

  • Theta - the first stages of sleep; a semi-wakeful state during which you can respond to external stimuli

  • Delta - deep sleep

Sleep Link supports a smooth transition from Alpha and Theta to Delta sleep.

But some people are more susceptible to awakening as they cycle through the Theta stage several times during the night. Many people use a “white noise” device, such as a fan, to prevent hearing sounds that can awaken them. Tuning into audio recordings can help light sleepers get back to delta sleep quickly.

Humans have been using light and sound to achieve altered states of consciousness for thousands of years. Primitive cultures used flickering fires and rhythmic drumming to induce these altered states. Today, you can alter brain wave activity to induce altered states on consciousness with binaural beat technology.

Studies show that when the perceived beat frequency corresponds to the theta, alpha or beta range of brainwave frequencies, you achieve altered states of consciousness.

Binaural beat CDs contain specially constructed sound waves, embedded into background music. When you listen to these recordings, you fall into a sleep.
