Vinpocetine for the Aging Brain

Vinpocetine was first introduced into clinical practice over 20 years ago in Hungary for the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders and symptoms related to senility. Since then, it has been used throughout the world to treat cognitive deficits related to normal aging. It is also thought to maintain brain cell electrical conductivity and to protect against damage caused by excessive intracellular release of calcium. It inhibits abnormal platelet aggression.

How Vinpocetine works

Vital components the brain needs for optimal function - including nutrition and oxygen- are delivered via the blood stream. Normal aging, however, results in a reduction of blood flow to the brain and a decrease in metabolic activity of brain cells. Vinpocetine boosts the metabolic activity in the brain by enhancing oxygen utilization, boosting the rate at which brain cells produce ATP, and accelerating the brain's use of glucose.

Regular use of Vinpocetine is said to help prevent and treat conditions related to insufficient blood flow to the brain, including stroke, dementia, memory problems, loss of coordination, dizziness, mood swings, depression, headaches and sleep disorders. It may also have applications in cardiovascular health, ulcers, kidney stones and other disorders.

By inhibiting an enzyme (phosphodiesterase) that indirectly causes arterial constriction and reduced blood flow, Vinpocetine allows natural blood movement to the brain, helping make better use of oxygen and energy.

Vinpocetine comes from an extract of the periwinkle plant, also known as Vinca minor. It has specific and measurable effects on the chemical reactions of neurons. There has been a huge amount of research on vinpocetine's safety and efficacy; one European database lists over 500 scientific studies on this compound.

The recommended dosage is 10 mg three times daily. It takes about 30 days of use before the effects of vinpocetine become evident however some reports suggest it may work within a few days, and in some cases results may be noticed after the first dose.
